The
students
¡@Our kindergarten students are generally at ages 3-6. The elementary school
students are in the age range of 7-13. The kindergarten students are usually
quite relaxed until they reach the elementary school age. Students have a
considerably heavy work load when attending Chinese public schools. With so
much pressure, the most intelligent student in the class will generally be
the most popular and looked up to. The older the students are, the more pressure
they have. And so the younger students easily learn English better than the
older ones. It is compulsory for students to remember a large amount of information
that can hardly apply to practical life. They are typically accustomed to
being intensively crammed with knowledge, but don't know the reasons why they
have to learn. They are also excessively tested, and have been taught that
there is only one answer to everything, resulting in a fearfulness of speaking
freely. In Taiwan, students rarely write reports and are generally poor at
coming to conclusions, developing and expressing opinions, and performing
similar activities which involve autonomous open-ended problem solving, creativity
and integration. So it's a hard time for them when they are asked for their
opinions. This is demonstrated by their silence and hesitation in conversation
time. This might cause frustration to foreign teachers in interaction with
students at first. As long as the teachers continue giving a try to refresh
students with humor, creativity, understanding, and brainstorms, the students
will incredibly pay them back with increasing progress.
¡@Even though a large proportion of the population now receives higher education,
the education system in general has been criticized for its inflexibility
and for failing to address the needs of Taiwan's rapidly changing society.
As a result, educational reform has become a major issue, and in the last
few years, measures have been adopted to tackle problems in different aspects
of the educational system.
